Your Complete Guide to Dental Implants in India

Patients often struggle with accepting the reality of tooth extraction when a tooth can no longer be saved, even with the most advanced dental procedures.
The next question that naturally follows is  “What’s next after extraction?”
Will I be able to chew properly again? Will it feel the same?

The good news is, dental science has evolved tremendously.  Today, dental implants in Andheri West and across Mumbai have become one of the most reliable, long-term solutions for missing teeth restoring both function and natural appearance.  So in this article we will understand what dental implants are, how they work and everything else you need to know before making the choice of going ahead with a dental implant.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants Plexus Dental StudioDental Implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed into the jaw bone to support a crown or bridge when teeth are missing. We normally have two parts of a tooth in our mouth- the root and the crown. The root is part of the bone which we cannot see and the crown is part of the tooth which is seen in the mouth. Similarly in case of a dental implant there are two parts- the root part which is a biocompatible titanium post (screw) and a crown part which fixes into this post and supports the cap which can be of tooth coloured material.

How Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are made to mimic natural teeth. Once the root part of the dental implant (titanium post) is placed into the jaw bone and has integrated with the bone, the next step is to  support it with the crown. This assembly can transmit the chewing forces similar to natural teeth enabling the patient to chew exactly like natural teeth. In cases of single tooth implants patients often forget they have a missing tooth.

Parts of a Dental Implant (Screw, Abutment, Crown)

A dental implant typically has 3 parts :

  1. The Implant post (Root): This part fixes into the jawbone
  2. The Abutment (Connector): This part connects the post to the crown or cap that is finally placed on the dental implant
  3. The Dental Cap (Crown): Which fixes onto the abutment and implant assembly and looks exactly like your tooth if it is made from tooth like material ( typically ceramic or zirconia)

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in India?

In our philosophy at Plexus Dental Studio, we really believe in saving natural teeth until the very end. A dental bridge, in my opinion, goes against this philosophy. It requires shaving two healthy natural teeth to support the missing tooth. If the adjacent teeth already have caps, a dental bridge may still be acceptable.

However, for younger patients with stronger chewing forces, and considering longevity, a dental implant works far better than a bridge. If you’re comparing dental implants, bridges, or dentures in Mumbai, our team at Plexus Dental Studio can guide you. We help you choose the best option based on your bone health and lifestyle needs.

Factors Affecting Price

  • Type of implant system

We have a lot of implant systems available in the market right from Chinese to Korean to European and swiss. The best implant systems are the European systems which can start from a base price of Rs 45000 per implant. In my practice I do not recommend Chinese implants as they can give problems with availability of parts and stability while in function once the cap is fixed. Korean implants are widely used in India, dental implant cost in India starts from ₹25,000 affordable implants with good quality and long term success.

  • Location and dentist expertise

Skilled implantologists charge much higher than general dentists placing implants. Best is to do a good research on finding an experienced dental surgeon to place the implant.

  • Additional procedures (bone graft, sinus lift)

Bone condition is the most important factor in the success rate of dental implants. In cases where the bone is deficient, additional procedures like bone grafting, sinus lifts etc are used to enhance the bone amount and safely increase the life and success of dental implants. All these additional procedures would come with a cost and are best decided and explained during the treatment planning phase.

Dental Implants vs Bridges vs Dentures

Dental Bridge₹15,000 – ₹30,0008–10 yearsModerate
Denture₹10,000 – ₹25,0005–7 yearsHigh
Dental Implant₹25,000 – ₹55,00020+ yearsLow

Implants vs. Dentures

To understand the best choice for you, we must first understand the biology of tissues in our mouth. Teeth are the most important for enabling us to chew food. Gums and bones are essential to support the teeth and increase their lifespan in the mouth.

Dentures rely completely on the gums and bone for support to help us chew. Implants, on the other hand, rely on the implant post fixed into the bone, with partial support from the gums. This means that the pressure on the gums and bone is much higher with dentures compared to implants.

Over time, dentures can lead to gum and bone loss. This makes the denture fit looser as you age, making it harder to chew effectively. Implants are fixed, providing a feel similar to natural teeth while eating.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Natural Look and Feel

Implants mimic natural teeth in function and appearance. Once the implant is in place in a healthy jawbone it integrates with the bone and functions similar to your natural teeth enabling you to eat hard and sticky foods just like your natural teeth. You do not have to alter your diet or compromise or worry about implants being loose or falling off with time.

Long-Term Durability

In a recent study by The University of Gothenburg in 2025 they had a 40 year follow up of 18 single tooth implants which had a 100% survival rate. On an average the success rate of dental implants is 95% in 25 years of follow up studies. Once the dental implant is placed in the bone I famously tell my patients that it will go with you in your grave which literally means that once the implant has integrated with your bone it cannot be removed or fail easily. Like any other natural tooth only the implant crown may require replacement every 10 years approximately.

Protecting Jawbone and Facial Structure

One of the main drawbacks of leaving missing teeth in the mouth is the so-called “DOMINO EFFECT”. As the tooth is extracted, the bone in that area starts to reduce pulling the adjacent teeth  into the missing tooth area, this in turns causes the other teeth to shift and alters the mechanical locking and stability of our bite which in turn affects our chewing efficiency and the long term health of remaining natural teeth, One single missing tooth over years can cause damage which can be irreversible to the teeth and joint. The reducing bone can affect the lip and cheek support altering the jaw bone and facial structure. For patients looking to further enhance their smiles, teeth whitening is a perfect complement after implant restoration. Restoring Confidence and Lifestyle

The best part about implants is that they are a type of fixed appliance which will not move while you talk, eat, chew or perform any other activity using your face and jaws. The confidence and feel of natural teeth makes it much easier to adapt and accept this new tooth/teeth in the mouth. Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Age Considerations

Implants are mostly advised in adults above 18 years of age as the jaw bone height and width are completely developed. As far as the age limit for implants is concerned our oldest implant patient is 94 years old. Hence age is not a bar for implant procedure as long as the patient is medically fit.

Health Conditions That Matter

Medical fitness is one of the most important considerations for dental implant procedure. Systemic illnesses like diabetes, kidney conditions or habits like smoking or conditions in which the patients are prone to gum diseases require proper testing and planning for implant placements. They have a direct effect on the healing and success of implants.

Bone Health and Grafting

Healthy and non-infected bone is required for placement of a dental implant. In cases of severe teeth infection and swelling it’s best to wait for healthy bone to occur post healing before planning any implant procedure. Your implantologist will take help of CBCT scans to study your bone health prior to implant placement.

What to Expect During the Implant Procedure?

Step-by-Step Process (Consultation to Crown Placement)

  1. Consultation & X-rays (CBCT scan and medical tests if required)
  2. Diagnosis and treatment planning with patient communication of the exact procedure
  3. Implant surgery (placing the screw- single appointment)
  4. Healing period (osseointegration – 2 to 6 months depending on the bone condition)
  5. Abutment & crown placement

Immediate Aftercare post Implant placement in the bone

  • Mild swelling/discomfort for a 3 days
  • Avoid hard foods, maintain hygiene.

Common Myths About Dental Implants (Fact vs. Fiction)

  • Myth: Implants are painful → Fact: Done under anesthesia, minimal pain.
  • Myth: They don’t last long → Fact: With care, implants can last a lifetime.
  • Myth: Too old for implants → Fact: Age is not a barrier if health is good.

Why They’re a Long-Term Investment?

Dental implants have a higher upfront cost but lasts much longer than bridges/dentures. Hence an initial investment into your dental health may reduce your future expenses on teeth and maintenance by more than half.
